Where is DF’s farm located?
DF Fyfer's farm is located 50km northwest of Vryburg in the Louwna area of the Kalahari thornveld. This region is known for its grass species, camelthorn trees, raisin bush, and wild sage, making it one of the best areas in South Africa for rearing cattle.
What inspired DF to adopt a new approach to farming?
DF was inspired by his father and driven by the need to address declining rainfall levels, which prompted him to explore regenerative agriculture. Through this exploration, he realized the importance of focusing on soil health in addition to grass farming.
What is DF’s farming philosophy?
DF believes that farming involves the entire ecosystem, not just the cattle. He emphasizes that healthy soil is essential because nutrients that aren't present in the soil cannot be transferred to the grass and, ultimately, to the cattle.
What is the major difference between DF's farming system and traditional cattle farming methods?
The major difference is that traditional methods measure success by the kilograms of meat produced per animal, whereas DF measures success by the kilograms of meat produced and profit per hectare. This holistic approach integrates soil health and ecosystem management into the farming process.
How does DF manage grazing?
DF stocks the veld with 500 to 1,000 head of cattle per hectare and moves them two to three times per day, depending on the season. This approach mimics the behavior of migrating game, preventing selective grazing and allowing the veld to rest, which is crucial for the success of the system. The cattle also trample organic matter into the soil, enhancing soil fertility and moisture retention.
What challenges does DF face?
A high stocking rate can negatively affect the condition of the cattle, making it challenging to maintain their health and fertility. DF addresses this challenge by providing extra feed, applying proper on-farm management, moving the cattle three times a day, and minimizing their stress levels.
What role do the chickens play in DF Fyfer’s farming system?
The chickens are kept in specialized coops on the veld, surrounded by electric netting for protection. They are regularly moved to contribute to improving the grazing by spreading both their manure and the cattle's manure, as well as helping to combat pests.
Bees
DF has introduced honeybees to his farm, planting flowers and shrubs near watering points to keep the bees throughout the year. The bees not only produce honey but also help pollinate plants in the ecosystem, contributing to overall farm health.
What type of cattle does DF use?
DF created a hybrid breed by crossbreeding different cattle to produce animals that can adapt to his regenerative farming practices. The hybrid, called the 'Adapter,' possesses traits like hardiness, fertility, early maturity, excellent parasite and disease resistance, and superior meat and milk production.
What are the benefits of DFs farming?
DF’s regenerative farming system meets the growing consumer demand for health-conscious, traceable, and ethically produced products. His farm markets beef, eggs, chickens, and honey directly to consumers under the brand Pure Veldt, ensuring that the products are grass-fed, naturally produced, and free-range.
How big is your farm and what /how many are you farming? We are farming 3400 Ha with 1000 + head of cattle and 4500 chickens
What staff do you have? Our family, our chicken operation’s manager’s family and 11 permanent staff’s families all live off this enterprise. Regenerative is wider than healing soil.
How do you farm your chickens? In moveable tractors we move daily to rejuvenate the soil and give our chickens the best possible life.
What are your chickens fed? GM Free grain and grass from the veldt. Our egg laying hens follow the cattle grazing our sweet Kalahari bushveld as an integral part of our Regenerative farming approach. Their diet of insects and grass are supplemented with our proprietary Non-GMO feed. As they are moved to fresh pasture daily, they improve the veldt by fertilizing and healing the soil, all while producing these wonderful nutrient-dense eggs inside these boxes!
